The leader of the Ute People, Chief Ouray, and his wife Chipeta live on in legend, as both are the namesake of many places and things in Colorado. Both were born of Apache heritage, he of Jicarilla Apache, in Taos Pueblo, New Mexico, and she of Kiowa Apache in Conejos, in what would become Southern Colorado. Both were adapted into the Tabeguache Band of the Ute and frequented the healing waters of Purgatory Springs.
